Botox, Dysport & Xeomin (all similar products) are time tested FDA cleared neurotoxins that temporary soften muscles movement of specific muscles to reduce the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles. Typically used around the eyes, eyebrows and forehead and can also be used to reduce a thick jawline, treat underarm sweating, tighten a loose neck and so much more!
BOTOX is well known for reducing fine lines and wrinkles but most people are unaware that it can also be used as a source for chronic pain control, including nerve and back pain. This is another reason why BOTOX is one of the most versatile treatments.
One of the main advantages of using BOTOX for treating chronic pain is the ability to treat a specific target area. Once we locate where the pain is originating from, they are able to utilize pain management techniques that target the specific muscle groups.
Once its been located, Botox is administered to treat the pain by relaxing the offending muscle or muscle groups. By using BOTOX to treat chronic pain, we are able to help our patients live healthier, more comfortable lives.
Where else can Botox & Dysport can be used?
Since 1978 Botox has been used in the application of various surgical procedures for the eyes before it became an FDA approved treatment for reduction in the appearance of wrinkles, as well as treatment for migraine, TMJ, urinary incontinence and sweating.
Today it can be used for the jawline (masseter muscles to reduce the thickness of the cheeks), for the underarms and hands for excessive sweating, around the lips to curl out and pucker the lip line and to reduce “smoker’s lines” and much more!
Treatment is measured in “units”. Typically the eyebrow area requires 20 units, around the eyes 22 units, and forehead about 10-20 units. Your exact dosages will vary on the results you are looking for, which will be discussed in detail at your consultation.
Most feel no sensation during or after a Botox treatment. Some may feel a slight pin prick and a light bit of pressure at the injection sites, but report mild to no pain.
BOTOX is described to be virtually painless. Some may say that BOTOX is mildly uncomfortable upon injection, however most patients report that they don’t even feel it. Some areas tend to be more sensitive than others.
Some will see results as soon as three days, most will see results in 7-14 days post treatment. Treatment is indicated to last up to 3 months before another application is needed, while some say that they see the effects up to 6 months post treatment.
BOTOX is safe for most patients with minimal side effects and downtime.
It’s recommended for the first 4 hours following injection that the patents does not exercise, lay down or massage the area.
Since botox takes 1-2 weeks for full effect, it is recommended to do it 2 weeks before your event or travel.
Patients with known hypersensitivity to Botulinum Toxin, any neurological diseases or disorders, disorders with the peripheral nerves, patients with progressive muscle weakness, infections of the lungs or decreased lung function.
Bruising, bleeding, pain, redness and swelling are possible. Most patients experience no side effects.
Usually one treatment every 3-6 months is recommended. However, follow up treatments may be necessary 2 weeks post injection to correct asymmetry or lingering wrinkles.
