Wrinkles, lines & more

Wrinkles are formed in a few different ways. One major culprit is the repeated motions your face makes over time. Your facial muscles contract and relax every single time you frown, laugh, smile, or make another expression. Over the years, this leads to wrinkle lines on your forehead, around your eyes, and around your mouth. Wrinkles formed by motion are referred to as "dynamic wrinkles," and they are the type that is best treated by botox.

Another type of wrinkles called "static wrinkles" are harder to treat. These wrinkles are formed as you sleep, or simply by the pull of gravity over time. These wrinkles are set deeper into your skin than dynamic wrinkles and don't respond as well to Botox and other treatments. However, new evidence suggests that Botox can be used to prevent these wrinkles from forming, or from becoming severe.

What is Botox?

Botox has been approved by the FDA to temporarily soften lines around the brows, forehead, and eyes. It's been in use since 1989 and is backed by years of scientific research and study. It's a popular option for wrinkles because it delivers results that are predictable and look natural. As a bonus, treatments can be done quickly and there is very little down time.

What Botox Injections Treat

Botox injections are used to soften lines around the face. This includes wrinkles located:

In the eye area
On the forehead
Between the eyebrows
At the mouth
On the neck
On the chin
Around the nose
At the upper lip

Botox can also be used to treat excessive sweating in your underarms, feet, and hands.

Who is a candidate for Botox?

People with moderate to severe facial wrinkles might be good candidates for Botox, especially if those wrinkles are located between their eyebrows, around their eyes, on their forehead, or on their neck. People who are concerned about excessive sweat are also possible candidates for Botox. It's important to be in overall good health before receiving Botox. There are some circumstances and physical conditions that can make it unsafe to receive Botox. For instance, you shouldn't have Botox if you:

Are under 20
Are currently pregnant or Nursing
Are allergic to any of the ingredients in Botox
Have multiple sclerosis or another neuromuscular disease
Have a known weakness in your facial or neck muscles
Have drooping eyelids
Have significant facial asymmetry
Have significant facial scarring
Have very thick facial skin
Have any other skin conditions that impact the injection site

It's important to talk to your doctor at Cienega Med Spa about any medication conditions or concerns you have before you receive Botox. They can help you figure out if Botox is safe and appropriate for you. They can recommend alternatives if it's determined Botox isn't right for you.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox is a drug made using the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It blocks signals between your nerves and you're and your muscles. In small and controlled doses, such as a botox injection, it can relax your muscles and soften lines and wrinkles. It will take between 48 and 96 hours to see the first effects after a Botox injection. Maximum effects are normally seen in about 1 to 2 weeks and results last for about 3 months.

Botox can also block the overactive nerves that cause excessive sweating, also called hyperhidrosis. Botox injections can paralyze those overactive nerves and prevent sweating in the areas where it was injected. Just like facial Botox, it'll take between 48 and 96 hours to see the effects of a Botox treatment for sweating. However, results generally last longer. Botox can stop excessive sweating for between 4 and 14 months.
