What Radiesse Is

Radiesse is an injectable made of calcium hydroxylapatite in a smooth gel. It helps your skin build its own collagen, to soften hollow areas and improve loose skin on the face, neck and body.

How the Treatment Goes

Plan your areas

Your provider looks at the areas you want to treat and how many each one needs.

Your injections

Radiesse is injected in small amounts throughout each area.

Results build over time

Your skin builds new collagen over the following months, so results appear gradually.

What the FDA Approved Radiesse For

Radiesse is a calcium hydroxylapatite filler. Here is what is on its FDA approval, and which of the areas on this page are off-label.

FDA-Approved Uses

Moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as smile lines (2006), facial fat loss with HIV (2006) and the backs of the hands (2015). Radiesse (+) is also approved for jawline contour in adults over 21 (2021).
FDA approval record

Off-Label Uses on This Page

Temples, neck, cheek volume and loose skin on the arms, buttocks and thighs are not on the Radiesse label, so these uses are off-label. Diluted Radiesse is approved only for upper-chest wrinkles. Your provider will go over what is and isn’t known for your area.

Main Risk

The most common side effects are swelling, redness, pain, bruising and itching. The main serious risk is filler entering a blood vessel, which can block it and, rarely, cause skin tissue loss, vision loss or stroke. Get medical help right away for vision changes, pale or white skin, or unusual pain.

FAQ

  • How many areas will I need?

It depends on what you want to treat. Your provider looks at each area at your visit and tells you how many it needs, and the free consultation is a good place to start.

  • How soon will I see results?

Results build gradually over the following months as your skin makes new collagen. Your provider will recommend how many sessions suit you.

  • What is the downtime?

You can go back to your normal activities after treatment, but some swelling, bruising and tenderness are expected for a few days. Your provider gives you aftercare instructions before you leave.

  • What is the difference between Radiesse and Sculptra?

Both help your skin build its own collagen. Radiesse is a smooth gel that also adds some structure where it is placed. Sculptra works gradually over a few months. Your provider can tell you which suits your areas.

  • Who will do my treatment?

Our nurse practitioners and physician assistants, who are trained in injection safety and placement, under the oversight of our medical director, a board-certified dermatologist.
