What RHA Filler Is
RHA is a family of hyaluronic acid fillers made by Teoxane. The four we offer are FDA-approved for adults 22 and older.
Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the body; the hyaluronic acid in RHA is made in a lab. As a gel it adds volume and softens lines where it is placed, and it can be dissolved with an enzyme if needed.
Which RHA Is Right for You?
RHA RedensityModerate to severe lines around the mouth. Sometimes called RHA 1.
RHA 2Moderate to severe smile lines and folds.
RHA 3Moderate to severe smile lines and folds, and lip fullness. Of the RHA fillers we offer, the one approved for lips.
RHA 4Moderate to severe smile lines and folds, and cheek volume. Of the RHA fillers we offer, the one approved for cheeks.
For smile lines, RHA 2 and RHA 3 are approved for the same use and depth; RHA 3 is the firmer gel. RHA 4 is the firmest and is placed deepest. Your provider matches the product to the area and how deep the line is.
RHA vs Restylane
Both are hyaluronic acid fillers, so the change usually shows right away and both can be dissolved. We offer both. Each family has its own product for each area:
RHA
Made by Teoxane.
- Smile lines: RHA 2, 3 and 4.
Restylane
Made by Galderma.
- Jawline and temples: Restylane Contour.
How the Treatment Goes
Plan your areas
Your provider looks at the areas you want to treat and picks the RHA product and amount for each.
Your injections
RHA contains a numbing medicine and is placed in small amounts. Appointments are booked for 30 minutes.
See the change
You can usually see the change right away. Most swelling and other common reactions settle within two weeks; in the lips and cheeks some last longer.
What the FDA Approved RHA For
The four RHA fillers we offer are FDA-approved for adults 22 and older:
- RHA 2, RHA 3 and RHA 4 (2017): moderate to severe wrinkles and folds in areas of the face that move, such as smile lines (nasolabial folds).
- RHA Redensity (2021): moderate to severe lines around the mouth.
- RHA 3 (2023): lip augmentation and lip fullness.
- RHA 4 (2025): cheek volume, and midface contour lost with age.

How Long RHA Lasts
Patients still improved at study follow-up:
- Smile lines (RHA 2, 3 and 4): about 8 in 10 of the patients checked at about 15 months, when those studies ended.
- Lines around the mouth (RHA Redensity): 67% at 12 months.
- Cheeks (RHA 4): 66% at 12 months.
- Lips (RHA 3): 48% at 12 months.
How long yours lasts depends on the area and on you.
Risks and Safety
- Common, and usually short-lived: swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, firmness and small bumps. Most settle within about two weeks, but in the lips and cheeks some last a month or more.
- Rare but serious: filler that enters a blood vessel can cause serious harm that may be permanent, including scarring, vision problems, blindness or stroke, which is why it is placed by trained providers.
- Call us right away if you notice: vision changes or signs of a stroke, unusual or worsening pain, skin that turns white or dark, or a lump or swelling that appears weeks or months later.
- Do not have RHA if you have had: severe allergic reactions, an allergy to the bacterial material used to make its hyaluronic acid, an allergy to lidocaine or similar numbing medicines, or a bleeding disorder.
- Tell us if you: take blood thinners, get cold sores, or have had fillers or facial procedures in the same area. Its safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established.
FAQ
-
How long does RHA last?
It depends on the area. In the FDA trials, about 8 in 10 of the patients treated for smile lines and checked at about 15 months were still improved, when those studies ended. The studies for lines around the mouth, lips and cheeks ran 12 months, and about half to two thirds of patients were still improved then.
-
Should I choose RHA 2 or RHA 3 for my lips?
Of the RHA fillers we offer, RHA 3 is the one FDA-approved for lip fullness. RHA 2 is not approved for the lips. For moderate to severe lines around the mouth, including lines above the lip, RHA Redensity is the approved choice. Your provider recommends what suits your lips at your visit. We also offer Restylane Kysse for lips.
-
Is RHA 1 the same as RHA Redensity?
In the US, yes. Teoxane called RHA Redensity "RHA 1" in its US study, and FDA records list one version of it as "RHA 1 Mepi". Outside the US, Teoxane sells TEOSYAL RHA 1 for fine lines such as those around the mouth; we have not confirmed it is the identical gel. "Redensity 1", without "RHA", is a different Teoxane product that is not FDA-approved. We book this treatment as RHA Redensity.
-
How many syringes will I need?
It depends on the area and the result you want. Your provider recommends an amount at your visit before treating. Every RHA syringe is the same price, whichever product you need.
-
Can RHA be dissolved?
Yes. RHA is a hyaluronic acid filler, so it can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed.
-
What is the downtime?
Most people go back to work and daily life right after treatment. Some swelling, bruising and tenderness are expected for a few days. For the first 24 hours, avoid strong sun, tanning lamps and extreme heat or cold such as saunas, which can add to redness and swelling, and ask your provider about exercise. Your provider gives you aftercare instructions before you leave.
-
Should I book before an event?
Book at least two to four weeks before it. Most swelling and bruising settles within two weeks, but lip treatments can take longer, and some people need a touch-up two to four weeks after the first visit.
-
Who will do my treatment?
Our nurse practitioners and physician assistants, who are trained in injection safety and placement, under the oversight of our medical director, a board-certified dermatologist.
-
How is RHA different from Restylane?
Both are hyaluronic acid fillers, so the change usually shows right away, and both can be dissolved. They are made by different companies with different gels, and each product is approved for specific areas. In the one FDA smile-line trial that compared them directly, RHA 4 and Restylane Lyft gave similar results through about 15 months. Your provider can tell you which suits your areas.
