What Is MOTS-c?

MOTS-c is a short peptide, sixteen amino acids long, that is unusual in where it comes from: it is encoded not in the DNA of the cell nucleus but in the separate DNA carried inside mitochondria, the structures that produce energy within cells. It was identified relatively recently, in 2015, and researchers have studied it mainly in relation to metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and how cells respond to exercise. The work published so far is largely in cell and animal models rather than in people. MOTS-c is not approved by the FDA for any use.

  • What is MOTS-c?

MOTS-c is a peptide of sixteen amino acids encoded in mitochondrial DNA, the separate set of DNA carried inside the mitochondria rather than in the cell nucleus. It was identified in 2015 and is one of a small group of peptides known to come from that source.

  • What has MOTS-c been studied for?

Researchers have studied it mainly in relation to metabolism and insulin sensitivity, and it is sometimes described in the literature as an exercise mimetic because of how it behaves in laboratory models.

  • Is MOTS-c FDA-approved?

No. MOTS-c is not approved by the FDA for any use.

  • What does the human research show?

Very little so far. The published work is mostly in cell and animal models. MOTS-c has not been established in large human trials, and we would rather say that plainly than overstate what is known.

  • Can I get MOTS-c at Cienega Medical?

MOTS-c is available by prescription following a consultation with a nurse practitioner, who will review whether it is appropriate for you.

  • How do I start?

Book a consultation. One of our nurse practitioners will review your health history and goals with you, and if this is appropriate they will write the prescription and we will order it for your visit. Your card is charged when the prescription is processed.
